Passionate home chef and heart health advocate Ariana Collins thinks eating well doesn’t have to mean giving up taste.
“I felt first overwhelmed when advised to reduce salt intake. But it turned out to be a chance to investigate novel foods and cooking techniques, she says.
These are Ariana’s best low-sodium, heart-friendly recipes—also quite tasty.
1. Salmon Crisped with Herbs
Ariana replaces the salt with fresh herbs including thyme, parsley, and dill. “Lemon zest is the secret ingredient here—it adds a blast of flavor without needing salt,” she says. For a whole dinner, team the salmon with roasted veggies.
2. Mashed cauliflower using garlic mashes
“I missed mashed potatoes, but this cauliflower take-off is revolutionary,” Ariana says. Fresh cauliflower steam, then mix with roasted garlic and a little olive oil or unsalted butter. For a little kick, toss black pepper on top.
3. Salad of Mediterranean Chickpeas
Packed in protein and fiber, this salad calls for chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onion. Ariana suggests seasoning it olive oil, lemon juice, and with a bit of smoky paprika. “The smoked paprika adds depth, so compensating for the absent salt,” she says.
Ariana’s path is evidence of how little modifications can result in major medical benefits. “Start with experimenting with spices and fresh ingredients—you’ll be astonished how nice healthy can taste!”
